Blossom & Burn Co. | Meet Lindsay

Blossom & Burn Co. | Meet Lindsay

Scent is often the first impression we have of a person — whether it’s when entering their home or upon first embrace. One smell can bring back a wave of emotions and memories that lasts long after the flame goes out or perfume fades. The first time I slowly pulled off the lid of a Blossom & Burn Co. candle, I was stunned. It smelled familiar and somehow like something I’d never experienced. It was the perfect reflection of my preferences and style, packed in creamy white wax.

As I sip chamomile tea and type this blog, the flame of Sunday Night dances along to classical melodies by Vivaldi. It is the perfect aroma to burn any day of the week and transforms your space into a tranquil oasis with notes of bergamot, cedar, lavender, lemon and vanilla. It’s not easy to create candles that feel special and unique to your customer’s taste but that’s exactly what Lindsay Wood, owner of Blossom & Burn Company intended.

Growing up in Northern California, she later moved to sunny Los Angeles and attended college, earning an Associate of Arts degree in psychology. After a few years, she moved to Florida with her now husband and began a new chapter that smelled like serendipity.

It began with the pandemic. My wedding got canceled. I had taken the semester off from school to focus on planning but there wasn’t anything to plan suddenly, so I didn’t really have anything going on. This all started when I sent a care package that had a succulent, candle, and matches, and realized how expensive it was!

Lindsay recognized that she finally had the time to learn something new and could create her own scents. After hours of research and experimentation, she began making candles in her home and selling them online. Quickly successful, she knew her knack for melding together scents was becoming more than a hobby. It was her love language.

Not only are Blossom & Burn Co. candles rich in smell but they are also safe. Made with 100% non-GMO soy wax, no phthalates and lead free cotton wicks, they’re poured in recyclable and reusable candle vessels, so you can burn them responsibly without fear of toxic chemicals being released into your space. This can’t be said for many popular candle stores or generic options displayed on the shelves of retailers.

Anybody who owns a small business, or large one for that matter, knows that developing a noteworthy (pun intended) product is only half the battle. Marketing is the other and often comes with an even more pronounced learning curve.

I’ve used a variety of influencer marketing where I sent a candle and they would post about it. I’m not sure if that worked so well as far as conversions. Email marketing has been the most successful,” Lindsay explains. Process is everything and she’s got hers down.

Since candle making is time consuming, Lindsay’s day starts bright and early. She preps the tools and ingredients needed and turns on a podcast — right now, it’s Being Boss where two women share tips and tricks for starting your own business. After taking a quick break to walk her dog, Dolly, she organizes glasses and begins melting the wax. Remaining time in the afternoon is spent working on the business — catching up on emails, finding other promotional avenues, designing labels and ordering inventory. Lindsay’s husband is a creative producer, so assists with photos and content when he can but she does almost everything by herself.

Being a one woman show, Blossom & Burn Co. is curated with single-minded devotion. It shows through the quality of her candles and beautiful content. Being a social media specialist by day, I keep a close pulse on the feeds of local creators. Blossom & Burn Co. shines brightly with vibrant flat lays and the hilarious “Sippin Scents” IGTV series where Lindsay drinks wine and sniffs candles with friends.

Opening your own business is a feat regardless of when a person undertakes it but successfully starting a business in 2020, scaling and growing means you have something exceptional. So instead of buying your next candle at a big box store, shop local and make a person (Lindsay, in this case) do an actual happy dance when she sees your order come in. I guarantee your new favorite candle will light up the space with a single spark. Queue hygge.
